You’ve done everything you were told to do. You sat through the injections, showed up for physical therapy, saw a chiropractor, and stretched faithfully at home. Yet months, maybe years, later, the back pain, the sciatica, or the ache that runs from your neck into your arm is still there. If that sounds familiar, please hear this: you haven’t run out of options, and there is real reason for hope.
At Lancaster Brain & Spine, we offer non-surgical spinal decompression for both the low back and the neck. We regularly see patients who’ve tried injections, physical therapy and other care, some living with pain for years, make real, meaningful progress with decompression. It isn’t a cure for everyone, but for many of the people we treat, it has been the thing that finally made the difference.
What Is Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression?
Spinal decompression is a gentle, computer-controlled form of traction. You lie comfortably on our Dynatronics decompression table while a harness system applies a slow, controlled stretch to your spine. Instead of one constant pull, the table gently increases the stretch, holds it, and then eases off in rhythmic cycles.
As we explained in our post on disc injuries, your spinal discs don’t have their own blood supply and rely on movement to stay healthy. Day after day, sitting, standing and lifting keep them under pressure. Decompression is designed to take that pressure off your discs and the nerves around them, giving irritated tissue a much-needed break.
Who It Can Help
We use decompression for both lumbar (low back) and cervical (neck) concerns, including:
- Bulging or herniated discs
- Sciatica and pain, numbness or tingling that travels down the leg
- Pinched nerves in the neck causing arm pain or tingling
- Degenerative disc changes and long-standing back or neck pain
- Disc pain that hasn’t improved enough with injections, PT or adjustments
Many of the patients we see for decompression come to us after other approaches haven’t given them the relief they hoped for.
What Our Patients Experience
Every person’s journey is different, but here’s what we hear from patients again and again as they move through their care:
- Relief from pain that had become part of everyday life
- Less radiating pain, numbness or tingling in the legs or arms
- Sleeping more comfortably through the night
- Sitting, driving and working with less discomfort
- Getting back to walking, golf, gardening, playing with the kids or grandkids, and the activities they love
- Feeling hopeful again after years of frustration
Those moments, when someone tells us they slept through the night or took a walk without pain, are why we love what we do.
How We Combine Decompression With Laser Therapy and StimPod
To give you the best possible experience, we often pair decompression with complementary therapies that help calm pain and support your recovery:
- Laser therapy (photobiomodulation): a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of light to stimulate the tissues beneath the skin. It’s comfortable, often feels gently warm, and helps support the body’s natural recovery process. Learn more in our laser therapy post.
- StimPod: a handheld device that delivers a gentle, pulsed electrical signal to targeted nerves through the skin. We use it to help calm irritated nerves and ease pain.
- Active care: targeted exercises, chiropractic care and simple home routines that help your spine stay strong and moving well as you feel better.
Your provider will build the combination that fits your body, your symptoms and your goals.
What a Session Feels Like
Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how relaxing decompression is:
- You stay fully clothed and lie comfortably on the table, supported by cushions.
- For low back care, a harness is fitted around your hips; for neck care, your head and neck are gently supported.
- The table applies a slow, gentle stretch that builds and releases in cycles. Many people describe it as a soothing pull, and some even doze off.
- Our team stays close by, and we can adjust the settings at any time to keep you comfortable.
Some people feel mild soreness after their first few sessions, a bit like starting a new workout. We’ll check in with you at every visit.
Is Decompression Right for You?
It isn’t the right fit for everyone, which is why we evaluate first. Decompression may not be recommended if you have:
- A recent spinal fracture or an unstable spine
- A tumor, cancer or infection involving the spine
- Advanced osteoporosis
- Pregnancy
- Screws, rods or plates in the area being treated, or a recent spinal fusion
- Certain other medical conditions, such as an abdominal aortic aneurysm
We’ll screen for all of these at your first visit. And if you ever notice worsening weakness, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or changes in bowel or bladder control, please seek medical care right away.
What to Expect at Lancaster Brain & Spine
Your care begins with a conversation and a thorough, hands-on exam. We listen to your story, review any imaging you already have, and check your reflexes, strength, sensation and movement. From there, our team will:
- Explain what we believe is driving your pain, in plain language
- Recommend a personalized plan that may include decompression, laser therapy, StimPod and active rehab
- Track your progress and adjust your plan as you improve
- Coordinate with your other healthcare providers when helpful
You don’t have to keep living with pain, or keep wondering whether anything else could help. If injections, PT or adjustments haven’t given you the relief you need, we’d love to talk with you about whether decompression could be your next step.
